Ingrown Nails

Dedicated to Quality Care

What is an Ingrown Toenail?

Ingrown toenails are a common yet often painful condition, where the nail grows into the surrounding skin, causing discomfort, swelling, and infection. It most commonly affects the big toe but can occur on any toe. This condition can cause discomfort, difficulty walking, and if untreated, lead to more serious problems like an infection. With the right treatment and preventive care, you can avoid future issues. If you’re experiencing pain or discomfort, a podiatrist can help provide the right solution for you.

How Can a Podiatrist Treat an Ingrown Toenail?

A podiatrist can provide various treatments for ingrown toenails depending on the severity of the condition. Common treatments include:

  1. Conservative Nail Trimming and Cleaning:

    • The podiatrist may carefully trim the toenail and clean the affected area to prevent further infection or irritation.

    • In some cases, the podiatrist may remove a small portion of the ingrown nail to relieve pressure and reduce discomfort.

    • If antibiotics are required, these can be organised in clinic or from your GP

  2. Partial or Full Nail Removal:

    • If the condition is more severe or recurrent, the podiatrist may perform a minor procedure to remove the ingrown portion of the toenail. This procedure is performed under local anaesthetic.

  • After the procedure a chemical called phenol is sometimes applied to prevent that portion of the nail from growing back but this depends on patient specific factors. This will be discussed prior to the procedure.

  • Patients undergoing a partial or full nail removal will have two follow up appointments which are included in the price of the procedure.

Whether you're dealing with a mild case or a more severe condition, we tailor our treatment to your specific needs, ensuring the best possible outcome.
